Bridesmaid dresses. A photo guide.

Shopping for bridesmaid dresses can be a fun event to get involved with all the bride squad! At the time of writing this feature though we’re currently on lock down, which means having a girly shopping morning out on the town followed by a late bottomless prosecco lunch is not an option. Bah! So instead let the dresses come to you!

Where to start with your Bridesmaid dresses.

Colour, style and price are probably the three main factors you need to consider. First things first though! You need to have some ideas on the types of dresses you want. The following photos of real brides with their bridemaids will give you a great starting point. Have a little ol’ nosey here to get a feel for what would look good on your wedding day.

Who pays is a question often asked.

Back in the day it was always the bride’s parents who paid for the bride and bridesmaid dresses. Obviously, times have changed and depending on your, and your bridesmaids, personal circumstances it might be unreasonable or unrealistic for you to shoulder the cost or expect them to. Early in your planning have an open and honest conversation with your friends to see what seems fair. If one of your married friends previously paid for your dress when you were her bridesmaid it might seem a bit unfair to ask them to pay now it’s your wedding.

Remember to consider.

A few things to be aware of when choosing your bridesmaid dresses are:

  • Think about your colour scheme and make sure they fit in with your look
  • Having said that the dresses don’t have to be all the same colour. Many weddings I’ve been to have dresses from a similar or contrasting colour palette
  • Give consideration to the season you’re getting married in
  • Consider mixing up the styles with one shoulder, off the shoulder, spaghetti strap, long, short or flutter sleeve
  • Bear in mind some of your bridesmaids might favour certain styles over others i.e. thigh length, ankle length, sleeveless etc
  • Remember to factor in extra costs for accessories such as belts, wraps and shawls etc
  • Make sure to leave enough time for any alterations before the big day
